The design of components made from materials prone to brittle failure, such as fibre-reinforced composites or concrete, presents particular challenges. To ensure that critical failure can be reliably ruled out, large safety factors must be taken into account, which runs counter to lightweight construction and the resource-efficient use of materials.
In-situ testing has proved to be a valuable tool for elucidating failure mechanisms, particularly in such brittle materials. Combining mechanical testing with non-destructive acoustic monitoring and/or 3D imaging using X-ray CT massively increases the information content of such experiments. The workshop aims to provide insights into new experimental possibilities for combined in-situ mechanical testing using X-ray CT and acoustic emission across several orders of magnitude on both the length and time scales.
As examples, experimental possibilities will be presented using laboratory CT (micro), a large-scale CT (component dimensions 6 m × 1 m × 0.7 m) and synchrotron CT (real-time). Participants will then discuss new fields of application and future development needs for the use of this technology across a wide range of industries.
