Modelling of ultrasonic waves has made enormous progress in recent years – yet whilst simulation tools have long been established in research, the question often arises in industry: does this actually have any practical benefit? This panel discussion will examine precisely this tension between academic excellence and practical application.
Guided ultrasonic waves and acoustic emission testing enable the non-destructive examination of materials and components, but their efficiency depends crucially on precise models. Prof. Dr Markus Sause (University of Augsburg), Dr Kilian Tschöke (Fraunhofer IKTS) and Dr Christian Böhm (Mondaic) demonstrate how various simulation tools – ranging from analytical approaches to numerical methods – model wave propagation in complex materials. But where are the limitations? Can simulations already optimise testing processes, save costs or even open up new fields of application? Or are they (still) primarily a tool for basic research?
The discussion will present specific examples from the aviation, energy infrastructure and construction sectors, demonstrating how simulations are already enhancing the precision and reliability of testing. At the same time, the discussion will explore why many companies still underestimate the potential of digital models – and which hurdles (e.g. validation, user-friendliness, computing power) stand in the way of wider acceptance.
The panel is aimed at researchers, engineers and decision-makers who want to know whether and how they can integrate simulations into their testing processes. The aim is to bridge the gap between theory and practice – and to show that the modelling of ultrasonic waves has long since become more than just an academic exercise.
